Roger Ebert Seriously Ill

According to the Chicago Sun-Times Web site, 64-year-old Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Roger Ebert is in serious condition at a Chicago hospital following an emergency operation to repair complications from an earlier cancer surgery. His vital signs appear to have stabilized. Mr. Ebert has already had four cancer surgeries in the past several years.

And what will we do without him? I'd like to be optimistic, and say "hey, he'll be fine..." but I suspect the odds are against it.

So, is he the greatest american film critic, still living? (I always preferred Gene...but...)

I think he is a superb critic. So many judge him off of the fluff that is his TV show when he deserves to be given a thumbs up or down (like how I did that there?) from his written reviews where his breadth of film understanding really shines. There's Kael and there's Ebert in the pantheon's upper reaches.
